Flacq is a district of Mauritius, situated in the east of the island. The capital is Centre de Flacq. It is the largest district, having an area of 298 km², and as of 2000 has a population of 126,839 and its geographical coordinates are 20° 11' 23" South, 57° 42' 52" East.


"Flacq" derives from the Dutch "Vlak," flat land above; as the Dutch settlers called this area hügellose. There are two places with the name of a small provincial town in the interior and, 5.5 km north-east, the village Poste de Flacq. This is the Hindu Temple Shir Sagar Mandir, which was due to its location is worth seeing: on a tiny peninsula, surrounded by mangroves, it offers a beautiful view of the Saint-Géran hotel. Central Flacq is a typical Mauritian town, mostly of Indians inhabited. The main legal means to Market Road: far and wide only shops and stalls. This district houses the village of Flacq, which is well known for its market. This market is on most tourist brochures.

Sunday reached the lively bustle its peak, and then will take place at the District Court about the interesting market. The range consists of garments, fabrics, fruit and vegetables. By prior registration is June to November to visit the sugar factory F.U.E.L is possible, including 25 percent of the island of electricity generated. For many visitors a surprise: The sugar factory produces one quarter of the electricity on the island. There is also the small village of trou d'eau douce, from where visitors take boats for tours on Ile aux cerfs island.

Belle Mare plage beach, an exotic beach with white sand and nice lagoon attracts a lot of mauritians and tourists. Leading internationally reputed hotels namely O&O Le Saint Geran, Belle Mare Plage, Le Prince Maurice and others are found on the coastline of the Flacq district.

Flacq is a district which is situated in the east of Mauritius. It is considered to be the largest district in Mauritius and it measures about 298 km2 and has a population of approximately 127,839. Hence, Flacq has a population density of 425.63 /km2. Flacq is considered to be one of the most happening places in Mauritius. Flacq has many specialities and provides many facilities to the people in the villages around flacq. This district houses the village of flacq which is well-known for its market. It is one of the largest open air market in Mauritius.

It also has a hospital which provides treatment to the sick and injurious people. It has many banking facilities( namely MCB, SBM, Banque de Mascareigne, Barclays and Bramer banks). There are also various shopping malls such as VIP way, Fortune way , Courts, Galaxy and Winners where people can do their shoppings. For leisure facilities, it has many hotels across its coast such the Coco Beach, Le Residence, Touessrok and so on. It also has a casino( Senator Club) in the centre of Flacq.

Flacq has about seven educational institutions which provide education to the children of the island(RGSSS, SLT SSS, MGSS, Prof. Basdeo Bissoondoyal, Darwin, Modern, Byron college). It even has a lycee polytechnique school. It has many bookshops which provide the students facilities of books and stationery. For security and people’s assurance, there is a police station with its CCID section and a fire station. During the Christmas and New Year festival, all shops and shopping malls stay open till midnight.


However, one of the problems that people may encounter on visiting Flacq during 2.15 pm till 3.00pm is that of traffic congestions where all the students rush quickly to the bus stand.
