Mauritius is a small island in the Indian Ocean. Mauritius has four smaller islands attached to the main island. These are Agalega, Rodrigues, St Brandon and Diego Garcia. These together are known as the Republic of Mauritius. The republic of Mauritius has an area of about 2000 square metres. Mauritius Island alone is about 1840 square metres, Rodrigues is 140 square metres and the rest is divided almost equally between Agalega and Diego Garcia. Although their small size, all these islands have an airport. For Mauritius and Rodrigues, it is quite big.
Mauritius was formerly a colony of the British Empire from 1810 to 1968. So, Mauritius got its independence from the British in 1968. The flag hosting ceremony was done in Champs de Mars, Port Louis. Thousands of Mauritians were present for the ceremony to see their country liberated from the clutches of the Queen of England. Mauritius then became a Republic of Mauritius in 1992. Again, this ceremony was performed in Champs de Mars, Port Louis.
Mauritius is often referred to as the Paradise Island (Paradize Island). The three S (SSS) of Mauritius which have given it an international reputation as a destination of choice for tourists are the sun, sea and sand. Mauritius is also very popular for deep sea fishing particularly for Blue Marlin. Some types of Blue Marlin are found only in the lagoon of Mauritius and no where else in the whole world. Air Mauritius is the main air carrier of Mauritius. Air Mauritius transports more than 1 million passengers every year. It is the industry with the highest turnover in Mauritius however it is not the most profitable one as expenses are huge for this industry. The biggest problem for Air Mauritius is the provision of fuels for its range of aeroplanes. Airport of Mauritius also has an excessive number of pilots in its crew.
Mauritius is almost famous for some extinct species, the most famous of which is the dodo. The dodo was a big bird which has been destroyed forever by the dutch between 1598 and 1715. The french then took possession of the island till 1810. The french were defeated by the British during the Cap Malheureux battle.
