Phoenix, town which forms part of the Vacoas/Phoenix Municipality, is also commonly referred to as the “Villes Jumelles”. Situated at the Upper Plaines Wilhems, it is subjected to a cool and humid climate. It owes its name to the legendary bird “Phoenix”.

It comprises of various sites of utmost importance namely the IVTB House, the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre which hosts cultural shows, the Industrial zone, the Special Mobile Force Headquarters, the Promenade Pere Laval, the “Gymkhana” Grounds, "La Bastille" prison and the National Women Enterprise Council Incubation Centre to mention some. Thereby Phoenix is acknowledged as an area of high economic, social and cultural activity. In the past Phoenix stood out as a reference for its Sugar Estate and Factory at Highlands.


The IVTB House is the focal center of Phoenix.


Famous for its shopping centers: ”Phoenix Les Halles” and “Jumbo Phoenix”, it is a town which attracts innumerable visitors and tourists. Being a mediator along the motorway, it is a region which registers a high quantity of traffic daily.

With a population nearing 45000, Phoenix is a multicultural town with several religious sites and temples the main ones being the “St Paul Church, the “Dar-Ul-Uloom Aleemiah”, the 7th Day Adventist Church and the “Iskon” center. The town comprises various amenities in terms of shopping, education, post office, area health center, banks, civil status office, leisure and sports facilities.

Moreover, the town counts numerous primary and secondary schools for instance the Phoenix Primary School, the "Sir Abdul Raman Osman SSS", the Phoenix SSS (Boys), the Aleemiah College, the Adventist College among some. The town constitutes a municipal multipurpose building which holds a pre-primary school, a social welfare center, a library and a sports complex.

The Tennis Ground at Petit Camp and the Basketball complex are places of high significance for important regional and national sports competitions are held there. The vast expanse of land available at the Phoenix Cemetary provide the necessary requirements for burials and incinerations.

Phoenix is a town which is presently encountering a boom in terms of development. With the achievement of Highlands “Ville Satellite” project, Phoenix will attain unprecedented progress.
