Vacoas

Vacoas is a town situated on the western part of the central plateau. The town of Phoenix which is located next to Vacoas is known as her sister "la ville jumelle". Vacoas has flourished by leap and bounds from the year 1963 onwards whereby it was proclaimed a town. It consists of many regions such as Solferino, Clairfonds, La Caverne and many more. There are many eminent personalities living at Vacoas such as the President of the Republic of Mauritius, members of the parliament and many doctors.
Vacoas is both a residential area and commercial area. However, it is preferred as a residential area due to its cool climate and pleasant environment. Vacoas is also well known for its soil fertility specially at Bonne Terre where a wide selection of flowers are cultivated on a large scale for both local and export purposes. But, unfortunately there has been a considerable decrease in the number of vegetable growers since the land is now mostly used for residential purposes.
The town of Vacoas is very active specially on Tuesdays and Fridays since these are the market days. Many people including inhabitants of Vacoas as well as residents of other towns and villages like shopping at the Vacoas market as it provide its customers with a wide array of fresh fruits and vegetables .Additionally, on these days, the Vacoas bus station and shopping centers are also crowded.
Moreover, many important institutions are found at Vacoas namely Dr. Maurice Cure SSS, Mauritius Meteorological Station, ENT Hospital and CNT head office. Meteorologists and meteorological technicians maintain a 24-hour watch in the forecast office in order to provide an efficient service to the Mauritian population specially during cyclones and also to the shipping and air services. The ENT Hospital is the only institution in Mauritius which is specialised in the treatment of health complications related to ears, nose and throat.

Furthermore, to activate its inhabitants socially and culturally, the town of Vacoas provides recreational places such as the Gymkhana, Serge Constantin Theatre, Pandit Sahadeo Gymnasium and the National Tennis Centre. Nevertheless, the Municipality of Vacoas has the potency to make the town a better place to live by providing more modern facilities and by better considering about the commercial aspects.
